Earth Resources Innovation Institute

Developing a world-class education program to train the next generation of highly skilled scientists
and engineers.

Mission

It is our mission to not just address, but to effectively solve the workforce crisis the mineral and mining sector is currently experiencing. ERII’s vision is to become an internationally recognized training hub that not only prepares graduates and young professionals but also inspires them to become discoverers and leaders in the industry. ERII will be located in Golden, Colorado, strategically positioned to work closely with Colorado School of Mines (CSM) and allied institutions of higher education across the Americas. Together, we will deliver a world-class education program, training the next generation of highly skilled and entrepreneurial-thinking scientists and engineers. Students and young professionals working at ERII will be embedded into the world’s premier research innovation hub for the mineral and mining sector, paving the way for a brighter future.

Drive

The number of university programs dedicated to economic geology, applied geosciences, metallurgy, and mining is diminishing, and with it, the number of graduates entering the workforce. Today’s framework of higher education forces universities to set priorities that do not favor investment in niche areas relevant to the mineral and mining sector. Student numbers, which translate to tuition revenue, are small compared to other fields, such as mechanical engineering or computer sciences. The number of large government grants, which translates to overhead revenue, is limited in comparison to other fields that have a perceived larger societal impact, such as biosciences.

Previous attempts at solving the issue of dwindling student numbers in fields relevant to the mineral and mining sector have failed. Endowments need to focus on supporting an entire group of highly performing individuals who can train large numbers of students. Capacity building can only be achieved if funds are available for student scholarships/fellowships, fieldwork, exchange programs, purchase of research equipment, and maintenance of laboratory infrastructure or strategic investment in new capabilities. A comprehensive approach is not just necessary, but it is urgently needed to solve the workforce crisis and address critical innovation needs in the mineral and mining sector. The time is ripe to transform the way that workforce development is conducted. The industry and leaders in the sector must invest in the next generation of discoverers and leaders without waiting for government to provide solutions.

Denver Mineral Exploration Symposium

The Denver Mineral Exploration Symposium aims to address the vulnerabilities in the global supply chain by bringing together experts in exploration geology, research and development, finance, and policymaking. The symposium will showcase new discoveries of precious and critical metals from stable jurisdictions. Attendees can also expect talks on emerging technologies, policies, finance, and ground-breaking research related to exploration and mining.

ERII is a proud supporter of the Denver Mineral Exploration Symposium, which will be held from September 12th to September 13th, 2025 in Golden, CO at Colorado School of Mines. Please visit the DMES website for more information on past speakers, exhibitors, and when registration opens next year.
